Theophanes the Confessor

Chronicler (died 817/818) and monk whose Chronographia covers the years 284-813, forming a continuation of the unfinished world chronicle (q.v.) of his friend George the Synkellos (q.v.). It is particularly important for the seventh and eighth centuries (as is the work of the Patriarch Nikephoros I [q.v.]), in part because its chronology (q.v.) forms the basis for these centuries, also because some of the historical sources that it relies on have not been preserved. The Chronographia is a major source for the first period of Iconoclasm (q.v.); its bias is fiercely anti-Iconoclastic.
